109. What is Routes for Learning?
Routes for Learning (RFL) is a specialist assessment framework designed for learners with profound learning difficulties and additional disabilities. In TrackAble, RFL is used in a specific way that differs from standard assessment frameworks. This article explains what Routes for Learning is and how to use it correctly in TrackAble.
What Is Routes for Learning?
Routes for Learning is an assessment tool (often referred to as a road map) developed in Wales. It focuses on early development in:
-
Communication
-
Social interaction
-
Cognitive skills
It is specifically designed for learners with complex and profound learning needs.
More information about Routes for Learning can be found on the Complex Needs website.
How Routes for Learning Works in TrackAble
Routes for Learning is a lateral framework, meaning pupils do not move through levels in a linear way.
Instead:
-
Staff plan learning pathways by selecting or creating a route
-
Progress is tracked along a custom learning path, rather than through traditional levels
In TrackAble, this is managed using the dedicated Routes for Learning (RFL) feature.
Important: How RFL Must Be Used
Although Routes for Learning is an assessment framework:
-
❗ It must only be used through the RFL feature in TrackAble
-
❌ It must not be used via the normal assessment screen
Using RFL outside of the dedicated feature will not work correctly.
Adding Routes for Learning to TrackAble
Routes for Learning is added to TrackAble in the same way as other assessment frameworks:
-
Add Routes for Learning as an assessment framework
-
Allocate it to the appropriate class
However, there are important differences to be aware of.
Restrictions When Using Routes for Learning
Unlike other frameworks:
-
You cannot:
-
Add statements
-
Remove statements
-
Re-order statements
-
Re-word statements
-
Changing the statements will prevent the Route Map from working correctly.
Setting Up Stars for Routes for Learning
Routes for Learning can be set to use between:
-
1 and 6 stars
Assessment is completed using star cards, just like other frameworks, but within the RFL Route Map.
How to Add Assessment Using the Route Map
To add assessment data:
-
Open the Routes for Learning feature
-
Select the pupil’s Route Map
-
Click on any star within a lozenge
-
A star card will open
-
Enter assessment data in the same way as other TrackAble frameworks
-
Save the star card
This updates progress along the selected route.
Why Use Routes for Learning in TrackAble?
