76. How do I set up a flightpath in an assessment framework?
The Flight Path Tab in TrackAble allows schools to automatically calculate and set progression targets for pupils across a key stage or academic year.
Flight paths can be used for:
-
Key stage targets
-
Yearly targets (if enabled in settings)
Targets are calculated based on a pupil’s baseline and expected progress over time.
Before You Start
To use flight paths successfully, the following must be in place:
-
Pupils must be baselined in the relevant assessment framework and subject
-
Term dates must be set in Admin > Lists > Terms
-
Targets type (Yearly or Key Stage) must be configured in
Admin > Settings > Targets
Without a baseline, TrackAble cannot calculate progression.
Important Key Stage Information
-
Flight paths only work for DfE recognised key stages
(Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 5) -
Key Stage 5 defaults to 2 years, but this can be changed to 3 years
-
Flight paths cannot be used if streaming is enabled in the framework
How to Set a Flight Path
-
Go to Admin > Assessment Frameworks
-
Select the assessment framework you want to work with
-
Open the Flight Path tab
-
Select a Key Stage
-
Select a Subject
-
You can set a flight path for:
-
A single subject in a key stage, or
-
All subjects in the same key stage
-
-
⚠️ Only whole levels can be selected as starting levels.
Setting Progress Expectations
For each starting level, select an ending level from the drop-down list.
You can:
-
Set progress as full levels, or
-
Set progress as a percentage of a level
Example:
You may choose to set two levels of progress across a key stage.
Target Creation Options
Once ending levels are set, you have two additional options:
Create Termly Targets
-
If selected, TrackAble will automatically create termly targets for each pupil
-
If not selected, only the end-of-year or key stage target will be created
-
Termly targets can then be added manually using Smart Fill in each pupil’s record
-
Apply to All Subjects
-
If selected, the same flight path will be applied to all subjects in the selected framework and key stage
Saving the Flight Path
-
Review your selections
-
Click Submit to save
⚠️ Important:
If your framework contains subjects with different level structures
(for example, Maths P1–P8 and English P3–P9), this feature may not work as expected.
You should repeat this process for each key stage in the framework.
How TrackAble Calculates Targets
-
If a pupil joins part way through a key stage, TrackAble will:
-
Use their baseline
-
Calculate where they would likely have been at the start of the key stage
-
Set targets accordingly
-
Important Notes
-
Targets created before a flight path is set will not be overwritten
-
If a flight path is amended:
-
Targets created by the flight path will update
-
Targets set or edited manually will not
-
-
Targets can always be manually edited in the pupil’s progression screen
-
TrackAble only sets targets for terms already created
-
If you add new terms, you must re-run the flight path
-
Recommendation
✔️ Flight paths should be set before large-scale target setting begins
🚫 Avoid changing flight paths mid-year unless absolutely necessary
