48. Why Is My Pupil Showing NL When They Are Working at a Higher Level?

When a pupil appears as NL (No Level) in TrackAble even though they are working at a higher level, it usually means a baseline is missing or has been set incorrectly. TrackAble relies on accurate baselines to understand each pupil’s starting point and calculate progress throughout the academic year. This guide explains why NL appears and how to correct it quickly.

Why TrackAble Shows NL

TrackAble displays NL for a pupil in a subject when:

  • No baseline has been set, or

  • A teacher mistakenly used Complete Level instead of Baseline, or

  • The baseline was set at the wrong level, or

  • Data was cleared or changed without reapplying the baseline

Without a correct baseline, TrackAble cannot determine the pupil’s starting point, so progress cannot be calculated and the system defaults to NL.

Understanding How Baselines Work in TrackAble

  • Baselines must be set once per academic year for each subject a pupil is assessed in.

  • The Baseline button marks all stars within the chosen level as complete on 30 August, the TrackAble academic start date.

  • Any assessment already entered at that level remains intact and is preserved.

  • TrackAble baselines at the level, not individual statements.

How to Correct NL for a Pupil

Step 1: Check for Missing or Incorrect Baselines

  1. Go to the pupil’s Assessment Screen.

  2. Review the subject showing NL.

  3. Identify whether a baseline is missing or was incorrectly set.

Step 2: Open the Level to Set the Baseline

  1. Select the academic year using the dropdown menu if required.

  2. Click Edit next to the correct level.

  3. The Baseline button will appear.

Step 3: Apply the Baseline

Click the Baseline button to set the starting point for the current or previous academic year.

This will:

  • Mark all stars in that level as complete as of 30 August, and

  • Allow TrackAble to calculate progression from that point onwards.

Important: Clearing Incorrect Data Before Baselining

If a teacher has previously:

  • Used Complete Level by mistake, or

  • Baseline was set at the wrong level

➡️ You MUST clear the level before applying a new baseline.

Buttons you may need:

  • Clear Level

  • Complete Level

  • Baseline

If you cannot see these options, your User Group does not have permission.
Ask your TrackAble Administrator to enable them.

Verify Progress Using the Levels Report

The Levels Report shows:

  • Each level a pupil is working within

  • Their completion percentage

  • The baseline level (underlined)

This is an excellent tool for diagnosing NL issues and validating corrections.
