43. How to Use Routes for Learning in TrackAble

Routes for Learning (RfL) provides a highly visual and flexible way to assess pupils with profound learning needs. TrackAble fully supports RfL Route Maps, allowing you to create personalised learning pathways, record assessment, and track progress over time. This guide shows you how to activate Routes for Learning, allocate it to classes, and use it to create and assess Route Maps for pupils.

1. Add the Routes for Learning Framework

  1. Go to Admin > Choose Assessment Framework.

  2. Locate Routes for Learning in the list and click Add to TrackAble.

2. Check the Level Order

After adding the framework:

  1. Go to Admin > Assessment Frameworks.

  2. Select Routes for Learning.

  3. Open the Levels tab and ensure the levels are in the correct sequence.

For instructions on reordering levels, see the Levels article.

3. Allocate Routes for Learning to Classes

To make RfL available for teachers:

  1. Go to Admin > Lists > Classes.

  2. Edit the relevant class.

  3. Add Routes for Learning to the class’s frameworks or subjects.

  4. Click Save.

Teachers cannot access RfL until it has been assigned to their class.

4. Enable Routes for Learning Permissions

Users must have permission to access the RfL Route Map feature.

  1. Go to Admin > Permissions.

  2. Select the relevant User Group.

  3. Enable Routes for Learning.

  4. Click Save Changes.

5. Open Routes for Learning for a Pupil

  1. Navigate to Routes for Learning from the menu.

  3. The full Route Map screen will appear.

6. Choose a Main Route (Optional)

At the top of the Route Map screen:

  • Select a Main Route such as Main Cognitive Route.

  • TrackAble will highlight the recommended route using arrows.

Alternatively, you can manually select lozenges to build a completely individualised route.

7. Select Lozenges and Set Target Dates

To create a personalised Route Map:

  • Click the checkbox on each lozenge you wish to include.

  • Selected lozenges change colour for easy identification.

  • Click “No date set” in a lozenge to enter a target date if required.

8. Complete Assessment Within a Lozenges

To record assessment:

  1. Click a star within any selected lozenge.

  2. A Star Card opens.

  3. Add assessment notes, evidence or media—just as you would in any other assessment framework.

  4. Click Save.

This integrates RfL assessment seamlessly with the rest of TrackAble.

9. Print or View Previous Route Maps

From the top of the Route Map screen you can:

  • Print the current Route Map

  • View a Route Map from previous years

  • Copy a Route Map from a previous year to reuse or update it

This helps with year-on-year tracking and supports transition reviews and EHCP documentation.
