42. How to Set Up Streaming in TrackAble

Streaming in TrackAble allows you to link subjects together in a progression pathway. This is especially useful when pupils begin with a broad "generic" subject and then move into more specialised subjects (e.g., pupils working below P8 who progress from “Generic English” into English Reading, English Writing, etc.). This feature enables you to set meaningful targets in subjects pupils have not yet started, because TrackAble can look backwards to their current attainment in a related subjec

What Is Streaming?

When streaming is enabled:

  • The Subjects tab in the assessment framework becomes Streaming.

  • You can define how subjects connect to each other in a pathway.

  • Targets can be set even if pupils have not yet begun a specific subject, because TrackAble traces back through the stream to determine their appropriate start point.

Example

A pupil working at P5 in Generic English can have a target set for English Writing, even if they have not yet begun that subject.
TrackAble will use their Generic English level to determine the starting point and target level within English Writing.

Important Notes Before Setting Up Streaming

1. Streaming applies to one framework only

You can only set streaming within a single assessment framework.
If you need streaming across frameworks, those frameworks must be combined first.

TrackAble can do this for you — contact:
support@trackable.org.uk
(A charge may apply depending on the work involved.)

2. Turning streaming off

If you disable streaming:

  • Your targets remain in place

  • But your streaming paths stop functioning

  • If you re-enable streaming, you must rebuild your streaming paths manually

3. Levels must not overlap

Levels in streamed subjects must follow each other cleanly.
For example:

  • Generic English: P1(i) → P3(ii)

  • English Reading & English Writing should then begin at P4, not earlier

This ensures TrackAble can calculate progression correctly.

How to Set Up Streaming

Step 1: Enable Streaming

  1. Open the relevant Assessment Framework.

  2. Go to the Setup tab.

  3. Tick the option to enable Streaming.

  4. Return to the framework tabs — Subjects will now appear as Streaming.

Step 2: Open the Streaming Tab

You will see a list of all subjects in the assessment framework, along with:

  • Their start levels

  • Their end levels

This shows which subjects flow into which.

Step 3: Define Streaming Pathways

For each subject, choose what it follows:

  • For generic or foundation subjects, choose Generic.

  • For subjects that build on earlier learning, select the preceding subject from the dropdown.

Example

  • Mathematics – Space, Shape & Measure: P4–P8 → Generic

  • Mathematics – Geometry – Measure: P9–P14 → Follows: Space, Shape & Measure

This creates a continuous learning path across subjects.

Step 4: Save Your Streaming Setup

Click Submit when you have finished defining all streaming pathways.

TrackAble will now use your streaming structure when calculating targets.

Important Limitation

Streaming cannot be used together with Flightpaths.

If streaming is enabled for a framework, flightpaths are automatically disabled.
