41. How to Set Targets for a Class in TrackAble

TrackAble allows you to set targets for a whole class within a single subject directly from the Assessment Screen. This ensures consistency across pupils and helps teachers plan learning and progression effectively. This article explains how to set targets step-by-step and highlights important considerations such as baselines and Smart Fill behaviour.

Before You Begin

Make sure pupils are baselined in the subject you are targeting.
If the “Year Start” column shows NL + 0%, this indicates the pupil has no baseline set.
You must set the baseline before adding targets (unless NL + 0% is their true starting point).

For help with baselining pupils, see the Baseline article.

Step-by-Step: Setting Class Targets

1. Open the Assessment Screen

  • Select the Assessment Framework.

  • Select the Class you want to work with.

  • It does not matter which subject you initially choose.

2. Click Set Targets

On the right-hand side of the screen, select:

Set Targets

TrackAble will default to All Subjects.

3. Select the Subject

Use the dropdown menu to choose the subject you want to set targets for.
TrackAble will display all pupils in the class for that subject.

Check the “Year Start” column:

  • NL + 0% = baseline not set

  • Other values = baseline already established

Establish a baseline first if required.

4. Choose the Target Level

  1. Go to the Key Stage or Year dropdown (depending on your school’s settings).

  2. Start typing the target level to filter the list.

  3. Select the correct target level.

Tip: Typing more characters narrows results and avoids scrolling.

5. Use Smart Fill

Click Smart Fill.

TrackAble will automatically generate termly targets using linear progression.

You can adjust targets manually:

  • Click the dropdown for any term.

  • Choose a different target if needed.

If a pupil joins mid-year:

If Advanced Smart Fill is enabled by your TrackAble Administrator, you can select the term from which targets should begin.

6. Save All Targets

When you are happy with the targets:

  • Scroll to the top or bottom of the page

  • Click Save All

Your targets for this subject and class are now complete.

How TrackAble Calculates Percentage Progress

TrackAble uses the number of statements and stars within a level to determine percentage increments.

Example:

  • Level contains 5 statements

  • Each statement has 3 stars → 15 stars total

  • Each star = 7% progress

So possible percentages are:

7%, 14%, 21%, 28%, 35%, etc.

These predefined increments will appear in the dropdown.

Self-Service Tips

✔ If Smart Fill doesn’t behave as expected, check your school’s Target Settings.
✔ If pupils are missing, verify they are allocated to the correct class.
✔ If target options look incorrect, review the Levels in your assessment framework.
