12. Understanding Common Zones Setup Issues in TrackAble

Zones are designed to help you calculate average progress across multiple subjects. To ensure your Zone Reports work correctly, each zone must be set up accurately and consistently. This guide outlines the most common issues that prevent Zone Reports from working as expected and explains how to resolve them.

1. Subjects Using Different Levels

Zones calculate an average progress score across all subjects within the zone.
Because of this, all subjects in a zone must use the same level structure.

A Zone Report will not work if:

  • Subjects have different numbers of levels

  • Subjects use completely different level names

  • One subject has additional or missing levels compared to others

If subjects do not share the same levels, TrackAble cannot calculate a valid average, and the Zone Report cannot be used.

Solution:
Check each assessment framework to ensure all subjects within the zone follow an identical level structure.

2. Subject Weighting Not Set Correctly

TrackAble allows you to apply weighting to subjects within a zone, giving more importance to one subject than another.

If you enable subject weighting (Admin > Settings > Zones):

You must also enter weighting figures in:
Admin > Lists > Zones

If you do not enter weighting figures:

  • All subjects will have a weight of zero

  • The report cannot calculate averages

  • The Zone Report will not work

If weighting is turned off:

  • All subjects are automatically weighted evenly

  • No additional configuration is required

Solution:
If you enable subject weighting, always add weighting values for each subject in the zone.

3. Reduced Progress When Only One Subject Has Progress

If a pupil has only made progress in one subject within the zone, the overall progress will look reduced.

This is because the Zone Report averages progress across all subjects—
including those with no progress recorded.

When this happens:

  • The single subject’s positive progress is averaged against subjects with no progress

  • The final result appears lower than expected

Recommendation:
Avoid using the Zone Report when only one subject in the zone has been assessed.
Instead, use the standard Progress Reports for individual subjects.

4. Zones Containing Only One Subject

Zones are designed to calculate an average across multiple subjects.

For example:
A Literacy zone might contain Reading, Writing, and Communication.

If a zone contains only one subject:

  • No averaging is required

  • A Zone Report is unnecessary

  • Other progress reports will provide clearer insight

Solution:
Only create zones that contain two or more subjects.
For single-subject analysis, use general Progress Reports instead.
